Research Assistant, Department of Sociology, University of Bristol, Four Years

(half-time), on the project 'News Event Cross-National Analysis' within the
framework of the European Social Survey (includes the possibility of additional
Teaching or Doctoral Research (half-time)).

Deadline for Applications: 9am, 15th December

Likely Interview Date: Late December/January

Start Date: ASAP

Scale: £20,842 - £31,525 pro-rata

This post is for 48 months half-time, available from January 1st 2007, or
starting as soon thereafter as feasible. The European Social Survey (the ESS:
http://www.europeansocialsurvey.org/ <http://www.europeansocialsurvey.org/> )
is an academically-driven social survey designed to chart and explain the
interaction between Europe's changing institutions and the attitudes, beliefs
and behaviour patterns of its diverse populations. The survey covers over 20
nations and employs the most rigorous methodologies. It is funded by the
European Commission's 5th and 6th Framework Programmes, the European Science
Foundation and national funding bodies in each country. The ESS is directed by
a Central Co-ordinating Team led by Professor Roger Jowell at the Centre for
Comparative Social Surveys, City University.

The News Event Cross-National Analysis project within ESS involves developing
and applying a method for coding salient political 'events' from newspapers at
times of survey questionnaires. Its aim is to produce a systematic
cross-national control for whether there are key political events that
potentially impact upon responses within specific countries. The proposed
method draws on claims-making analysis, protest event analysis and media
contents analysis approaches for retrieving information from news texts. Some
knowledge and practical experience of quantitative and qualitative media text
analysis approaches as well as survey research would be an asset. This project
is led by Professor Paul Statham (Bristol) and Professor Howard Tumber (City),
as part of a cross-national network of collaborating researchers and
institutions, including ZUMA, University of Athens and SCP Netherlands. The
post will be based at Bristol.

This position is half-time and involves working closely with the principal
investigators on methodological advancement. In addition, the appointee will be
required to manage the establishment of the international network, liaise with
the ESS teams, administer the project on a daily basis, and recruit and
co-ordinate teams of coders locally. In addition, the appointee will be
expected to contribute fully to the advancement of this specific methodological
field, as well as organise and attend international conferences and meetings,
and participate fully in producing academic publications and other outputs.

There is also a possibility for the appointee to undertake either addition
teaching or doctoral research (if relevant) in the Department of Sociology at
the University of Bristol on a half-time basis along side the position. For
doctoral researchers, it would be preferable for the appointee to apply news
text analysis approaches and methods within her/his doctoral research, but the
substantive topic of the doctoral research is open. However, given the location
of the position, interests in an aspect of migration and ethnic relations,
European integration, political communications, media and/or social movements
may be an advantage.

The successful applicant will become part of a team of researchers at the newly
established Bristol Institute for Public Affairs, a purpose-built research
centre, and a member of the Department of Sociology. S/he will be part of the
international research networks collaborating on this research, including the
Centre for European Political Communications (EurPolCom -
http://ics.leeds.ac.uk/eurpolcom/).

Applicants should have training and qualifications in a relevant social science
discipline, equivalent to, or above Masters' level. Practical research
experience with qualitative and quantitative data-sets and knowledge of
research methods is a requirement. Further details on the project are visible
at EurPolCom (http://ics.leeds.ac.uk/eurpolcom/). Further details and an
application form for the post available at www.bristol.ac.uk/vacancies or email
[log in to unmask] quoting ref number 12802.
