I am sure that Stephen is correct.The article set out the contrast between the image and the reality. As the image is based on perceptions of public librarians the examples were deliberately far removed from public libraries. As a former public librarian for over 30 years that does not necessarily please me but it was tactically astute.

It was also astute for CILIP to work with the Saturday Guardian as that day's paper is read by more young professionals than the Monday to Friday editions; or that was the case a few years back according to a Manchester source who should know. The "Work" supplement is targeted at young professionals and graduates as the "Rise" section makes plain.

So well done CILIP in my opinion.How are you going to approach the Daily Telegraph?

Amanda is right. It was very good to see such a high profile article describing interesting posts and people, but a great shame to harp on about this old stereotype.

However the recent presentation by The Marketing Director of Westminster at PLAC seemed to imply that to those not part of the sector we still portray that old dull image.

Having been involved in a number of initiatives over the last few years, specifically for public librarians (sadly not featured in the Guardian article), I can vouch for the fact that there are some very modern, unusual, whacky even, and dynamic young public librarians, and it would have been good to see one of them featured as well.

However it was very good to see this, on the whole, positive image of the profession, and more of the same please Cilip.

But that's precisely the kind of copy CILIP are always criticising! I was a bit diappointed that they dragged up those tedious stereotypes. It smacks of defensiveness.
