Dear Colleagues,
My apologies for cross-posting. I am writing in regards to Dante's
use of theology in the DC, frequently cited as correct and coherent
with Catholic exegesis. So does anyone know which doctrine or
doctrines maintained someone could be prevented from repenting and
that a soul could be condemned to hell while the person was still
alive? Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks very much,
Nina Cannizzaro
I reply to you in great haste and not thinking in terms of 'Catholic exegesis', but when I wrote on that particular point in an article decades ago, I cited two Scriptural precedents for Dante: Psalm 54, 16: 'Let them go down alive into hell', and John 13, 27 'and after the morsel, Satan entered into him'. (I am almost certain that the first of those references was given to me by Philip McNair, I knew the second.)
Best wishes,
