The IGRS, in collaboration with the new Institute of Musical Research,
is putting on an event on 5 January 2007, dedicated to Robert and Clara
Schumann, and Heinrich Heine. The acclaimed pianist Gottlieb Wallisch
returns to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for this event, where
he will be partnered by the young tenor Jan Kobow.

Although Schumann and Heine met only once, the artistic affinity was
such that Schumann set a large number of Heine's lyric poems, revelling
in their ambiguity and their veiled meanings. The Schumann marriage
provided a second artistic dialogue, with Schumann embedding secret
messages to Clara in his piano music, and Clara writing music based on
themes by Robert.

The first half of the January event, which commemorates the deaths of
Robert and Heinrich in 1856, and Clara in 1896, will contain the most
extended of Clara's tributes to her husband: the hauntingly beautiful
Variations on a Theme of Robert Schumann, Op 20. In the second half we
shall hear Robert's Dichterliebe, with its 16 Heine settings arranged as
Clara once recommended, together with the 4 songs which Robert
eventually deleted from the cycle. Readings in German and English will
be interspersed throughout the evening.

This event has been made possible through a grant from the University of
London's John Coffin Fund, and the IMR and IGRS are greatly indebted to
Dame Janet Ritterman for undertaking the programme planning.

Admission, with refreshments, is free of charge. Tickets are obtainable
