Hi Sharon,

Yes please I too would love to see the results, it may help sway
management, and could well be use for data stat's for the ILT Strategy
and the 3 Year Development Plans.

Thanks from Mark

Dear All,
Many thanks to everyone who responded to my survey. There is a
considerable amount of qualitative data to work through but as soon as I
have managed to organise it into something more meaningful I will
forward to anyone interested.
Best wishes,
Sharon

Subject: learning platform survey request

Dear All,

This is request for respondents to a learning platform survey.
Apologies for taking advantage of this list, so please only read on if
you would like to participate, your time to in doing so would be greatly
appreciated though!

Details of project

I work for the JISC regional support centre, East Midlands and I'm in
the process of doing an MA in education. For part of this I need to
complete a project for one of my assignments - you have probably guessed
what I'm going to ask! Anyway, I have built an online survey which can
be found at the address below, and even if you don't have time to
provide lots of detail anything would be very much appreciated. I'm
focusing on people who have either long term experience of learning
platforms or those who are active developers of them. The questionnaire
is only available till this Wednesday and needs to be completed in one
sitting. below is some info to give you an idea of the project, anything
interesting that comes out of it I'm happy to share. I'll just be glad
to get it over!!

When you finish the survey the only thing to remember is to click on
the finish button otherwise all responses are lost!

Many thanks in anticipation, Sharon

Are the notions of what constitutes effective use of learning platforms
changing?

Over the past 5 years implementation of learning platforms in the post
16 sector has been on the increase. This growing use of learning
platforms has added to a consensus as to what constitutes or enables
effective use of a learning platform. Viendra Mistry in a paper entitled
"Embedding VLEs: Shifting from Virtual to Valued" identified "seven key
stages" and I would suggest that they can be regarded as accepted
notions of what constitutes effective learning platform use:

1.	The creation of a realistic vision for teaching and learning
2.	The implementation of strategies of inclusion and ownership
3.	The encouragement to attain new competencies and skills
4.	The encouragement to explore new models of teaching
5.	The support of communities of practice
6.	The utilisation of project management techniques
7.	The implementation of a programme of evaluation

However following a recent presentation on learning platforms and
subsequent discussions with colleagues it appears, anecdotally at least,
this consensus around learning platforms may be shifting. Of particular
interest was the focus on pedagogical approaches and the extent to which
the communication aspects are fulfilling their potential. The presenter,
a developer of an HE learning platform that is now well embedded within
the organisation, put forward the case that pedagogical soundness is not
always a decisive measure for the success of their learning platform.
One explanation being that a learning platform can allow more time for
effective face to face practice as it frees up the teaching session by
providing a place for some of the course materials or information that
can be accessed before or after the session.

So, with the above in mind the overarching aim of this preliminary
investigation is to identify if there are new understandings emerging
and therefore challenging what is considered essential for effective use
of learning platforms. This will be done by using the "Seven key stages"
developed by Mistry as a framework for the research questions with a
range of respondents from the post 16 sectors. To gather the data I will
use Autoform which is an online tool developed by Andy Sutton, Senior
Lecturer in Information and Communication at The Nottingham Trent
University. The key aims being to discover if:

*	the agreed consensus is moving in new directions
*	to identify any unexpected or surprising outcomes in learning
platform use
*	to consider how organisations measure the success of their
learning platform
