In the News this week: Hungarian uprising 50th Anniversary

Digital 1956 archive
The Open Society Archives are based at the Central European University in Hungary and contain a specialist collection of material relating to Communist government and society in East and Central Europe after the Second World War. This section of their website provides free access to a archive of online materials relating to the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. These include newspaper clippings from the Zwack collection., CIA daily briefings and weekly analyses from 1956, and catalogues of OSA print and audiovisual archive holdings. They include accounts of eye witnesses to the Soviet Union invasion.

Audience for political blogs
This site provides access to a report by Joseph Graf which was published by the Institute for Politics, Democracy and the Internet in October 2006. It presents the results of a survey of political blog readers in California, discussing the typical demographics and attitudes of the readers, why they read web blogs and what their attitudes towards them were. Information on the methodology of the survey is provided. The paper is in PDF format.

Georgia historic newspapers
The Georgia historic newspapers project forms part of the Digital library of Georgia. It provides free access to the full text of three leading Georgia newspapers: Cherokee Phoenix, the Dublin Post, and the Colored Tribune. Coverage is largely 1750-1925. users may search or browse the database. Articles are in PDF format. All aspects of the political and social history of Georgia are covered. The site is particularly valuable for tracing information about Black civil rights, emancipation and issues relating to slavery in the South. Other key issues are Cherokee nation and Native American Indian history, civil rights issues and local and national American elections.

North Korea Polls: Angus Reid Consulting
Angus Reid Global Scan is a component of Angus Reid Consultants (ARC)â€"an international partnership dedicated to exploring and understanding public opinion at the regional, national and global level. Since 2003 it has provided free access to public opinion polls and election tracking from nations worldwide. This section of the website contains polls on North Korea. They include coverage of the 2006 crisis concerning North Korea and nuclear weapons testing. Many of the entries are summaries of research reports , however each entry offers full bibliographic references and some detail on poll data methodology.

Germany Under Reconstruction digital collection
The Germany Under Reconstruction digital collection forms part of the University of Wisconsin Digital library. It provides free access to online materials relating to the economic and political reconstruction of Germany in the post World War II period. This includes substantial coverage of the work of allied coalition occupying forces in rebuilding the democratic political system and economy as well as the reaction of the German people. Materials include books, US and British government reports, military reports and some newsletters. Materials are published in English or German. Period covered is mainly 1945-1955. The site may be searched or browsed. Copyright information is displayed.

National Leadership Index
The National Leadership index is a partnership between the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and U.S.News & World Report. It has conducted annual surveys since 2005 into levels of confidence in American leadership. This comprises opinion polls into levels of confidence in eleven sectors of American life. These include trust in political leadership, the military, leaders of political parties, the president, and confidence in the US role as a world leader. The latter includes materials relating to whether American citizens feel that they are threatened by potential terrorist attacks. The website provides information on the methdology used, the full text of the report and associated research studies. All reports from 2005 can be downloaded. Full text is in PDF format.

US-UK communications on Iraq 2002: US Freedom of Information Act documents
This site provides free access to a collection of United States government documents made available under the Freedom of Information Act. They comprise a collection of over 50 declassified American and British government, memos, papers and reports from Summer 2002. They discuss issues relating to security assessments of Iraq and the threat posed by Saddam Hussein, searches for weapons of mass destruction and accounts of meetings with Iraqi government officials. Most materials are in PDF format.

Index New Zealand
Index New Zealand (INNZ) provides an index to journal articles and newspaper reports covering all aspects of New Zealand and South pacific political, economic social and cultural life. It indexes over 3,000 titles many of which are published in New Zealand. Users may access the database free of charge from the National Library of New Zealand website. It is possible to access all materials from 1987 onwards. Updates are made monthly. Each entry has an abstract of content.

September 11 collection: Internet Archive
This site provides access to a collection of archived video footage and films relating to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center and Pentagon. They have been compiled by the Internet Archive. Topics covered include footage of the original events and Ground Zero, plus subsequent academic and popular discussions of the causes and consequences. Reports of the 9/11 Commission, conspiracy theories, international terrorism, Al-Qaeda and the war against terrorism are avaiable. The site may be searched or browsed. Some annotations on content, technical and copyright information is provided.

Fantasy health minister
Fantasy health minister is an online game created by the New Statesman and Pfizer Policy Forum on Health to encourage discussion about issues relating to the management of British health policy and the NHS. Students take charge of the nations health with the aim of improving health and increasing popularity while remaining within budget. At the end of the session a report card is received. The website provides information on technical specifications and copyright. free registration is required. The site would also be of interest to media students studying the uses of online games in educational settings.

National Autistic Society
This is the website of the National Autistic Society based in London. "The National Autistic Society exists to champion the rights and interests of all people with autism and to ensure that they and their families receive quality services appropriate to their needs. The website includes information about autism and Asperger syndrome, the NAS and its services and activities." Information is available for different groups including family members and professionals. The Information Centre page provides free access to the research tool Autism Data -a database of published material. This is also available on CD ROM by subscription, along with Research in Progress and Professionals in Autism.
