Some good news from Zimbabwe. Nick As founder of the Zvishavane Water Project, Zephaniah Phiri is to receive the National Geographic Society /Buffett Award for leadership in African Conservation – the presentation and reception to take place on Monday November 6, 2006 at the National Geographic offices in Washington DC 2006! I knew nothing about the steps leading up to this but inexplicably received an invitation and of course want you to know, as having put me on the right path when I wanted to have Mr. Phiri nominated for the King Baudoin International Development Prize in February 2004. (It seems that each year two National Geographic/Buffet Awards are given and, according to the invitation, this year, along with Mr. Phiri, a Mr. Jaime Incer Barquero will also receive one, in his case for leadership in Latin American Conservation). I can find nothing that deals with this year’s awards but add an extract about the 2005 awards below. With the citation, you’ll notice, comes a $25,000 cash prize. Enough to relieve Mr. Phiri and his family of financial hardship. And, as is likely, of some of their community too.
