medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

I am having difficulty identifying the source of this motif and wonder
if anyone might be able to help me. The text is from a 13th century MS

Vulpis si ei canes insequentes acriter institerint, mox se pedibus eorum 
prouoluens, more canum adulantium eis alludere incipit. Cuius blanditiis 
delincti canes; impetum reuocant et blandienti sibi alludunt. Sic 
uersipellis quisque cum a quouis superiore uitia sua feriri et reprehendi 
pertimescit. Obsequia et uerba adulatoria quandoque et munera praetendit, 
quae omnia eos excaecant, qui quaerunt quae sua sunt, non quae Iesu Christi. 
Vulpis comprehensa, si leui quidem ictu tangatur; mortuam se simulat, ut 
postea cum locum et tempus nacta fuerit, cautius aufugiat. Ita nonnulli, cum 
leui qualibet reprehensione a quouis potentiore feriuntur, emendationem 
spondent. Sed iterum cum defuerit quem timeant, ad consueta mala recurrunt.
