medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture I have just read the DNB biog of Lawrence of D and particularly noted the following statement about his "Dialogi": begin quote The last book is about vice, virtue, God, and heaven. As its name indicates, the Dialogi is a series of conversations between three friends, Lawrence and Philip (monks) and Peter (a Breton); despite many classical allusions, they are delivered in an informal style, full of banter, jokes, and personal arguments, showing that God's grace operates not just in ancient history but among ordinary people who behave in ordinary ways. end quote. Has anybody every suggested that "Peter (a Breton)" may be Peter Abelard ? Or an allusion to him ? The article sugests that lawrence "Dialogi" was written just after 1144. The Council of Sens was 1140/1 and Abelard died in 1142 so the context is absolutely right. There is nothing in Clanchy's "Abelard." I've not looked anywhere else. Does anyone know of a later edition of the Dialogi (+ English translation ? Hope on!) later than the edition of 1880 cited under the DNB article ?
