With reference to Paul Burkitt's suggested list of books, we would just like to add that a cautionary rejoinder to the subjective Brenneman book can be found in Michael P. Carroll, IRISH PILGRIMAGE: Holy Wells and Popular Catholic Devotion (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1999). Well worth reading.
