medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Ronald Finucane in his book Miracles and Pilgrims: Popular Belief in Medieval England, J M Dent, 1977, certainly suggests that the Pecham-Cantilupe controversy contributed to the Franciscan attitude towards the "miracles" of Thomas.( pages 137, 176). He also cites a report of an 13th C attempt to persuade a Franciscan Friar of the opportunity to make a great deal of money by his providing testimonies of 24 people under his control to such miracles. The Franciscan sent the man off with a flea in his ear! (Page 70). Perhaps this is not an isolated instance of such attempts to generate fraudulent miracle claims and may have copntributed to the Order's attitude - together with the well-known spat between the bishop and Pecham.
