4  LLYFRGELLOEDD CYHOEDDUS / PUBLIC LIBRARIES

4.1 Better Stock, Better Libraries:  stock procurement proposals

MLA have published Better Stock, Better Libraries, outlining proposals for library stock purchasing with the potential to save up to £20million a year.

The new procurement proposals, which maintain local accountability for stock selection, would mean better availability and more efficient management of stock, more flexibility to meet local needs and reduced unit costs of stock. Local authorities would have more money and resources to reinvest in refreshed book stocks, improved information and communications technology, longer opening hours and more staff helping customers get the best out of their local library.

The report is available from the MLA website at:

Culture Minister, David Lammy MP informed him that different aspects of the performance of the 149 public library authorities in England have been assessed, on different basis, for DCMS since 1998. There was no formal assessment by the Department before then. Full response:

6  AMRYWIAETH / DIVERSITY

6.1 Quantifying Diversity: Mesur Amrywiaeth

Update

Following interviews on 31 July, CyMAL has awarded the research contract for Quantifying Diversity to Carolyn Carter of CJC Consultancy.  Carolyn is based in Somerset but has previous experience working with libraries in south Wales.  She has a strong background in conducting equalities research in the museum, archive and library sector.

The results of the research will provide CyMAL with critical baseline data and the Quantifying Diversity report - which will be completed in the early part of 2007 - will identify priority areas for development work.  This will enable CyMAL to help museums, archives and libraries to address issues of equality and diversity with regard to their local communities.

Services will receive questionnaires in mid October for completion by mid-November but Carolyn will be making initial contact with museums, archives and libraries in September - so look out for more information coming soon.

7  DATBLYGIAD PROFFESIYNOL / PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Survey paves way for dialogue with employers
A major survey of skills needs in the lifelong learning sector, including libraries, archives and information services, gets underway next month. It is being carried out by Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK), the Sector Skills Council responsible for the professional development of all those working in the lifelong learning field.

The survey is the first part of an 18-month process that will lead to the signing of a Sector Skills Agreement between lifelong learning employers and funding bodies across the UK.

Hundreds of employers within the sector will be invited to take part in telephone interviews and an online survey to identify their current and future skills needs. They will also be asked about the quality and quantity of training their employees receive.

For more information visit: www.lifelonglearninguk.org/ssa/employer_survey.html

To ensure that LLUK are able to accurately represent the views of

employers in our sector, in Wales, they need employers to support the completion of an online questionnaire survey, which can be accessed at

http://www.lifelonglearninguk.org/ssa/employer_survey.html

The survey will take respondents approximately 25 minutes to complete (and needs to be done in one sitting).  A downloadable version of the questions is available on the survey web page to enable employers to draw down the information and discuss it with their management teams before their responses are input online.

The survey will remain open until Saturday 30th September.
