I must admit I do wonder what the Chinese think systems like Quickbird
and Ikonos do when they're over China! These commercial satellites
provide 1 metre resolution images, with georeferencing good to a few
metres. The SRTM provided more or less glabal digital elevation models
at 30m resolution. Why do they think a map is a military secret any
more, as far as standard topographic maps go? Of course, toponymy is a
political football - I don't suppose they like seeing Taiwan or Thibet
labelled as if they were separate countries.

Very ironic when you realize that a huge amount of the detail work
necessary to create GIS systems all over the world is outsourced to
China.

News item on aol.co.uk at present, China is concerned about non
Chinese
making maps of its territory, threat to 'national security'. Ooops, I
just
looked at Beijing on Google Earth, here come the Chinese security
forces.

(Maybe not as bad as Iran, where in 1998 the tour guide took us to an
ancient fort next to a modern army base. We could look but most felt
uncomfortable taking photos of the ruins as we were being stared at by
quite a few soldiers from next door)
