The discussion has been interesting in throwing up the changing market, the pace at which user preference can shift as retail provision changes, the attitude to libraries 'competing', the range of non-blockbuster themes etc. Is this a bit like literature and reading - the library conceived as an animated space, deploying all media as a centre for cultural access and creativity etc etc ...... and not just a place to passively lend leisure or cultural objects. Multimedia has been an opportunity to broaden the operation, shift the image, make some money. That's now changed - and would that be the right policy now anyway? I'll talk with colleagues and CILIP re the BPI agreement. I'm not sure who the appropriate body/individuals would be. I think in these days of very cheap online CD purchases we suffer from not being able to offer titles as 'new'. I feel the future may be with 'non-pop', we need to emphasise that we have got strong collections of Jazz, Classical, World music etc. As an added point to the debate about DVDs I think we have to be very careful about hire charges. However reasonable we think we are I think the general perception of libraries as a 'free' service means the public are very aware and cynical about prices charged for media loans.
