For some reason I haven't had Christine's message yet, but I can assure her that there has been plenty of discussion about CILIP - including some bitching sessions - in the past. One of the values of the list is that it allows people to vent their frustrations with CILIP; it doesn't have any effect on CILIP, but it helps one feel better, & they would otherwise be suppressed, causing all sorts of complexes & neuroses later in life!

Christine makes a good point., we must reflect the comments of new
people to the profession if we are to attract them and keep them in
membership.

I totally agree!  As a LIS student who has yet to get her first
qualified post, I am still forming opinions on CILIP and how useful they
are.  The jury is still out, so to speak, but their bitterness over this
harmless list (amongst other things) is really not endearing them to me
at the moment.
I would like to think that someone on CILIP council actually reads this
list and will realise how useful it is to all of us--not so we can bitch
about CILIP, but so we can discuss general LIS issues.  I have lurked on
this list for at least 6 months and so far, apart from this discussion,
I don't think anyone has actually really talked much about CILIP at all.
The impression I get is that it is just a forum for general LIS
discussions in the UK.  Where is the harm in that?  I would hope CILIP
would reconsider their position on this, as insisting we close a list
that doesn't belong to them is likely to do their reputation more damage
than any thread on this list could.
