I will be recording fires within the SMR under a separate 'historic events' table linked, where possible, to GIS polygons. The information is important in understanding the present topography of a settlement i.e. areas containing a definite phase of rebuilding activity. It will also assist in understanding the standing buildings of that area and how the 'character' of that area has developed. These factors are significant when Conservation Area Character Statements are being produced. It may also lead to a fire being a local research strategy in respect of building recording in that area e.g. looking for re-used burnt stonework and evidence of architectural features significantly pre-dating a fire. Disastrous floods may similarly be significant.

Documentary / historical evidence is significant, especially to the post-medieval & modern periods. In the long term I would hope that HER's will be linked to Record Office databases to create a map based method of interrogating both sets of material.

A good point... personally, I would wonder if events such as this are part of the SMR or not, and as such, question the overall purpose of an SMR (no, I am not trying to make a point here, I pose it as a real question).

Does the SMR contain a db of historical events or just discrete archaeological remains? Do histories count as archaeological remains? Well... yes and no.

My guess? At present, no... SMRs should be a record of material culture not histories per se... otherwise the structure of the things could well become unwieldy... and the searching of them impossible. After all, who gets to start putting things like World War II into the list? Would it serve any purpose of just make querying the db all the more difficult?

If, however, there were to be known historical events to be recorded, such as fires, etc. perhaps they would be best placed in another table that has a many-to-many relationship with the monument and events tables. This would allow multiple possible relationships to be created - so that a burnt deposit layer could be noted as possibly belonging to a variety of different known historical events...

Of course, I pity the poor people who have to manage this... but hey... it's a thought.

Subject: Fires!

Dear all,

Does anyone have any ideas about how to go about recording a fire on the HER? For instance, there are several recorded events where Worcester was destroyed by fire, either deliberately or otherwise, obviously leaving the potential for archaeological deposits of a burnt nature (although none so far attributed to any of these events!). We have stumbled into this area whilst thinking about the recording of various sieges, and felt that if a siege/battlefield is recorded then there must be some way of recording an event such as a fire too... Thoughts?!
