Half Position as Lektor(in), Department of English, American and Celtic Studies, University of Bonn (from Britain or Ireland)

The above position will become available in October 2006. This position mainly involves teaching English language to advanced university students, the vast majority of whom have German as their native language.

Applicants must be under 32 years of age when they take up the position. A postgraduate degree (e.g. an M.A.) is required. The University prefers applicants to come straight from Britain or Ireland, i.e. not to be resident in Germany immediately before taking up the post. A knowledge of German is essential, preferably at an advanced level (university standard). Previous experience of Germany is highly desirable.

This half-time position is limited to a maximum of two academic years, starting from Winter Semester 2006/07. The successful candidate will be paid according to BAT IIa. The teaching load is 8-9 hours per week, with some exam marking during the university vacations.

Duties

The bulk of the work entails teaching English to university students who had 7-9 years of English at school before entering university. Their standard of fluency is therefore high. The language courses taught focus particularly on accuracy of usage in vocabulary and grammar. Translation from German to English is an important element in many courses. Many courses are organised together with other members of the language staff as parallel courses and involve teaching materials being pooled, but some leave the individual lecturer with a lot of freedom to use their own materials. In addition to language courses there is scope for teaching a course on British and Irish life and institutions (e.g. geography and aspects of regional culture of Britain and Ireland), Phonetics or a course on advanced essay writing in the field of either literature or linguistics. In addition to teaching and marking duties, the successful applicant will be required to help to set, invigilate and correct exams.
