Dear Colleagues,

We encourage you to submit abstracts to the following session:
T39 : The 17 February 2006 Philippine Landslide
for this Fall Meeting of AGU in San Francisco. The session description is:

On 17 February 2006, a debris avalanche devastated Barangay Guinsaugon,
Southern Leyte, Philippines. After a series of heavy rainfall, the landslide
occurred along the steep fault scarp of the Philippine Fault Zone, a large
and active tectonic structure that traverses the entire length of
the Philippines. Barangay Guinsaugon is located at the foot of the scarp
and was directly along the path of the downward moving mass of volcanic
rocks. In the aftermath, more than 1,000 lives were lost with 654 families
displaced. This session welcomes contributions on the Guinsaugon
landslide to help shed light on the actual cause of the catastrophe.
Contributions on similar events and research that provide information and
introduce new techniques on the early detection of large landslide events
are also welcome. The session outcome, which has emphasis on lessons
learned from the Guinsaugon, Leyte disaster, is aimed towards hazards
preparedness and mitigation of future landslides in the Philippines and
elsewhere in the world.
