International Refugee Film Festival in Tokyo In celebration of World Refugee Day (20 June), the UN Refugee Agency announces the opening of the Refugee Film Festival on 20 July. The opening film, "The Refugee All Stars", is an amazing documentary of strength and inspiration that tells the story of six Sierra Leonean refugee musicians who face a daily struggle to keep their music and hope alive. A special screening of the film will be held on 28 July 28 from 17:00 at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. The musicians from the movie are also attending the Fuji Rock Festival in the end of July. This and several other films will be premiered in Japan during the festival. Commencing exactly one month after World Refugee Day, the Refugee Film Festival will run for the first time in Japan from 20-27 July and will feature 18 films about refugees. The films will be screened free of charge at four venues: L'Institut Franco-Japonais de Tokyo (Shinjuku Ward), Goethe-Institut Tokyo (Minato Ward), Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Tokyo (Chiyoda Ward) and the Swedish Embassy Auditorium (Minato Ward). There will be six occasions for screenings with special appearances: the Japanese director of "Ghada – Songs of Palestine"; a guest speaker from the Japanese NGO, TPAC, for "Innocence"; the founder of the first NGO in Cambodia after Khmer Rouge for "Children of Krousar Thmey"; and a presentation by Peace Winds Japan for "Kandahar". Details can be obtained on the UNHCR Representation in Japan website: www.unhcr.or.jp. Angelina Jolie, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, expresses her support for the film festival stating "Film is an important medium to introduce the many aspects of the lives and circumstances of refugees across the world, and through this entertainment vehicle, create better awareness and understanding."
