DRUGS AND SOCIETY IN AFRICA


Announcement & Call for Participation

The African Centre for Research and Information on Substance Abuse (CRISA), a leading non-profit organization devoted to research on psychoactive substances and the prevention of substance related problems in Africa, announces the seventh in its series of biennial scientific international conferences. Researchers, health care professionals, policymakers, other experts and students interested in all issues related to alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs are invited to participate in the conference.

Conference Theme:
 
Responding to Alcohol and Drug Problems: A Focus on Effective Policies and Interventions

26 - 28 July 2006, Chelsea Hotel, Abuja, Nigeria


Sub-themes include:

? Social, cultural and historical aspects of substance abuse 
? Alcohol marketing, youth and social welfare 
? Patterns of alcohol and other drug use 
? Alcohol and drug use among youth, women, special populations
? Health and social consequences
? Alcohol, drugs and HIV/AIDS 
? Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of alcohol and drug policies 
? Prevention and treatment of licit and illicit drug problems 
? Community responses to alcohol and drugs
? Drugs trafficking: Law enforcement and correctional services responses
? Drugs, the media and drug control

Papers that address other aspects of any psychoactive substance use will be accepted for presentation. Preference will be given to papers based on original research or comprehensive reviews of the literature. 

Papers accepted for presentation will be published in Perspectives on Drugs and Society, Volume 2 (CRISA Monograph Series) after the conference. Authors are also encouraged to submit their papers for publication in the African Journal of Drug and Alcohol Studies.

Conference Registration

The conference fee is N6000 ($50 for international participants, and N2000 for students). This covers conference materials, snacks, and participation in all conference activities.  

Submission Deadlines

  Abstracts:  30 May 2006            Full Papers: 7 July 2006

Abstracts should be limited to 150 words. Priority will be given to papers based on empirical research (especially those that test for relationships between substance use and health or social consequences), social and policy analysis. These papers will be selected for publication in Perspectives on Drugs and Society (CRISA Monograph Series) after the conference. Authors may also elect to submit their papers for publication in the African Journal of Drug and Alcohol Studies. 

Abstracts can be submitted by e-mail or in hard copy, and full papers on floppy disk with three hard copies to the address shown below.
