medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (10. June) is the feast day of: Ithamar of Rochester (d. c. 656) The first Anglo-Saxon bishop in England. He succeeded Paulinus as bishop of Rochester; Bede comments favorably on his worth and learning. Landericus of Paris (d. c. 660) Landericus (Landry) became bishop of Paris in 650. He founded the city's first hospital, but is most noted for his care of the poor in a major famine in 651---L. sold all his personal possessions and also much church equipment to buy food for them. Bogumilus (d. 1092) Bogumilus was a Pole who served as chancellor for his uncle the archbishop of Gniezno, then succeeded to the see himself in 1067. He served for five years, attempting to discipline the clergy and remedy abuses, but finally giving up and resigning. B. then became a Camaldolese monk. B's cult was confirmed in 1925. Henry of Treviso (blessed) (d. 1315) Enrico was born to a poor family of Bolzano. He moved to Treviso and married, but his wife and children died. After that, he worked as a day laborer, giving away everything that he didn't need for subsistence, and living a very pious life. A popular cult sprang up on his death---people rushed to get some fragment of his possessions (which consisted of a hair shirt, a log that he used as a pillow, and a pile of straw); the bishop had the body moved to the cathedral to protect it, and even then a wooden palisade had to be put up around the bier. 276 miracles were recorded within a few days after his death. Benedict XIV confirmed the cult. -- Dr. Phyllis G.
