1. Fellowships at Forced Migration and Refugees Studies FMRS, AUC In 2003, FMRS became a partner of the Development Research Centre (DRC) at Sussex University in the UK. Funded by the UK Dept for International Development (DfID). DRC has initiated a five-year, multi-university project researching and analyzing livelihood and policy implications of migration, globalization and poverty. As part of this project, FMRS is offering two fellowships. Duration: FMRS is recruiting two research fellows, each for four months or more during the academic year 2006-2007. Selection: The applicant for the FMRS/DRC fellowships Scheme will have a master?s degree or evidence of graduate study, in human rights, development or refugee issues. They must be willing to work with FMRS/DRC coordinator during the first semester in preparing and/or writing materials for the course in January 2007, Development Policies: Rights and Forced Migration. During the second semester, the second fellow would be researching the literature for the conference that will be held in June 2007, entitled Towards resolving the problems of forced uprooting: A regional approach. Fellows will be encouraged to conduct research that will lead to their own publication or a co-published article. Internships at Forced Migration and Refugees Studies FMRS, AUC In 2003, FMRS became a partner of the Development Research Centre (DRC) at Sussex University in the UK. DRC has initiated a five-year, multi-university project researching and analyzing livelihood and policy implications of migration, globalization and poverty. As part of this project, internships are offered to those who would like to study or gain experience in research or community outreach/development in the context of forced migration and refugees studies in the middle east and Africa. Eligibility: A master's degree and previous experience in forced migration is preferred Duration: Internships usually start either in September or in January for a minimum of 3 and ideally 6 months. The first intake will commence in August/September 2006 Selection: All those meeting the general criteria stated above are welcome to apply. Candidates from developing countries, including the Middle East, Africa and South Asia are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications will be considered on merit by members of FMRS joint steering committee. Those who wish placements with FMRS outreach projects or CBOs will be advised. Potential assignments: Interns may submit their own research proposals or, to gain experience, they may also apply to work with a faculty member in his/her research. They may also apply to assist with one of the outreach programs implemented by FMRS. Alternatively, they can apply to work with one of the refugee community based organizations (CBOs) in Cairo. There is an urgent need for persons having training in community development to work with these CBOs, assisting them with the organization requirements for registration and/or fundraising. Funding: Interns are self funded, however, FMRS will support research costs of DRC projects incurred by the intern. Basic monthly expenses in Cairo amount to between USD 400-500, which covers shared accommodation, food and transportation in Cairo. Those without knowledge of Arabic or the language of the refugee population they propose to study or work with must include funds for the services of an interpreter FMRS offers a course of community interpreters and can provide trained personnel. These costs are estimated at USD 100 per month. Please see details of the internship-funding competition, and other funding sources available.
