Creativity, Writing and Magic – Workshop Series

1 July (Saturday)

With Louise Tondeur, novelist and hedgewitch

2 pm to 6 pm    £18.00 per day

Following the popularity of the previous workshop, Louise returns to Treadwell’s with a three-part series Magic and Creative Writing day course. These afternoons will be filled with practices and exercises that liberate and strengthen creative writing - a skill necessary for storytelling, poetry, novels, ritual, or evocation - as magic cannot work without imagination! The three days develop and build on one another to allow participants to make breakthroughs in their writing, but they also stand alone as one-day workshops. Louise will teach writing techniques coming from a magical and pagan perspective: meditation, inspiration, and creative visualisation. The course will also put you in touch with other pagan / magical writers, so you can share experiences and benefit from mutual moral support. For all workshops: you won't be asked to read your work aloud; bring a notebook and a pen; wear comfortable clothing; refreshments will be provided; the cost of each day is £18.00; times will be from 2-6pm. Louise Tondeur is the author of two well-regarded novels, Haven Home for Delinquent Girls and The Water’s Edge. She has taught creative writing and drama at Cambridge University and is now a lecturer at Roehampton University, Surrey. In her private life she is a solitary witch with a leaning towards planetary magic. She will be setting activities to be done between / before workshops so it will help to have participants email addresses (optional). Registration via Treadwells in the usual way.

1st July (Saturday): Tarot / Creating characters: How to write a character and put him/her in a story. Some of the activities will be inspired by tarot, but no previous knowledge is required. Bring your tarot pack if you have one - but don't worry if you don't know the cards.

22nd July (Saturday): The mythology of the broomstick and liminal spaces: Using visualisation (and all the senses) to create magical settings and environments. Bring a broomstick if you have one – but don't worry if you don't.

2nd September (Saturday): Demeter, Goddess of the autumn equinox: Using sound, shape and rhythm in your writing. Bring something to drum with or to shake , and also something to offer to Demeter (can be homemade).

Runes & Ritual:  Heathen Practices Ancient and Modern

2 July (Sunday)

Pete Jennings   11 am – 5.30 pm    £35.00

This is a full, experiential day on the Northern Tradition. The morning will focus on runes, and the afternoon will concentrate on ritual. The rune session explores the different futharks, and works on helping people get beyond simplistic meanings. The activities will include: reading and writing with runes; making bindrunes; composing codes; rune meditation; divination; stances and chants. The afternoon ritual session will examine historic and archaeological sources to find what heathens really did, and then apply it to constructing a blot ritual utilising all five senses. We look at evidence about masks, wands, music, poetry and dance. The priests and magicians will be looked at: gothi & gytha, galdr and seidr magic and inter-relationships with the volva and vitki roles. Everyone will participate actively in the practical activities as well as in the discussions.

Pete Jennings is a former president of The Pagan Federation, and is a longstanding heathen, and is an honorary life member of Odinshof. He is the author of several books on the Northern Tradition, including The Norse Tradition, Pagan Paths, Pathworking, Haunted Suffolk, Supernatural Ipswich, and The Gothi and the Runestave. He had his own folk show on BBC Radio Suffolk for many years, and used to play in various folk and rock bands, making three albums. He is still active on the entertainment scene, singing, storytelling and compering Treadwell’s is delighted to have this warm and inspiring pagan with us for this day. Registration via Treadwell’s, places limited. The cost of the day incudes tea, coffee and all handouts.

Making Soap for Magic: Planetary Correspondences and Hands-on Practice

Cunning Man and Hedgewitch Workshop  -- with Rebecca B and Rebecca W.

15 July (Saturday) 12 noon to 6 pm   £40.00

Village witches, or cunning folk, down the centuries practised various arts that have fallen out of general knowledge. Treadwell’s hosts workshops teaching these, hoping to encourage a general revival. This workshop teaches the making of soaps and herbal baths, both of which are central to folk medicine and folk magic. You will come up with soaps, salts and bath bombs that are unique to their owners, using non-specialist equipment that can be found at home. There will also be instruction in making magical blends – i.e. planetary blends – or soap for a particular magical purpose, and people will be encouraged to make their own magical blends from a list of correspondences given in a historical talk at the start of the day. Rebecca Beattie and Rebecca Wood are Treadwell’s regulars who have a passionate love of their craft and a combined total of 20 years' brewing experience. Price, payable in advance, includes all supplies, handouts, refreshments and the items you will make to take home.

Hypersigils and Personal Fiction Suits – A Chaos Magickal Day at the Outer Reaches

Sunday, 16 July

This one-day course is with John Harrigan,

Artistic Director of FoolishPeople, the Occult Theatre Company

11 am – 5 pm   £35.00

John Harrigan will take participants through the creation and delivery of a hypersigil, a powerful and experimental form of magick, most known from Grant Morrison (‘The Invisibles). A 'hypersigil' is an extended piece of artwork, be it a novel, song, dance etc, that is created with a similar intent as a sigil.  The day will work on their creation and exploring how they can be made to maximise their power and effectiveness. Participants will also be assisted in the creation of a fiction suit with which to explore and experiment within the hyper-reality of the narrative of the personal artistic work that you create. By transforming various aspects of your fiction suit within the hypersigil you in turn work towards working with aspects of your own personality, both positive and negative. This day will focus on all aspects of the hypersigil and how it relates to magical intention. The exercises will also work with notions of will and motivation, and it will be shown how hypersigils are able to explode old, fixed, or inherited identities. Advance Notice…

The Alchemical Mercurius

September 21st (Thursday)

Paul F. Cowlan - Practitioner, Musician, Poet

. In this talk Paul Cowlan, who has worked with spiritual alchemy for over twenty years, will outline the significance of Hermes/Mercury in alchemical thinking, providing an overall view of this central concept. If alchemy has a patron deity it's Hermes, god of riddles, tricks and secrets; or as the Romans called him, Mercury; tutelary wheeler-dealer deity of trade, thieves and market places? The arch illusionist, the ultimate Tricky-Dickie, the fluid that is really a metal but behaves like a liquid. But also the spiritual essence, the divine messenger, the psychopomp, the guide of souls, the only one who can lead you safely through the darkness of psychological dissolution; because he himself will certainly be a part of that dissolution. Now you see him, now you don't. Mercury is all these things, and many more. Paul doesn't promise to tame the mutant spirit of Mercurius, or bring him to you in a bottle, but he will certainly provide you with glimpses which will make Apollo's mischievous brother a little easier to comprehend. This is Paul’s third talk in three years at Treadwell’s – he returns by popular demand.
