medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Tom Izbicki is in large part right in suggesting that the influence comes via Ezekiel (via commentary by Irenaeus) BUT......

In his commentary on the book Ezekiel Walther Eichrodt, whilst noting the general similarity of the images to images found in the ancient world of the kind your questioner notes, says that: "Ezekiel himself was evidently more aware of the differences between his own conceptions and those of the idols and images of the ancient East than of the similarities." (Walter Eichrodt, Ezekiel, a commentary, SCM Press, 1970,  p57.)

So, yes, Susan, you are probably right, "It isn't that simple"!
