medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (12. April) is the feast day of:

Julius I (d. 352) Julius became pope in 337. He spent most of his
episcopate fighting Arians, especially defending the deposed bishops
Athanasius and Marcellus (of Ancyra). Does anyone know why the
sixteenth-century Julius II chose to name himself after this guy?

Zeno (d. c. 371) Zeno may have been an African. More certain, he
had a good classical education and became bishop of Verona in 362.
He won his diocese away from Arianism, converted a lot of people to
Christianity, and even built a basilica. About ninety of his sermons
are extant.

Sabas the Goth (d. 372) The king of the Goths started to persecute
his Christian subjects in 370. 51 martyrs are known, most notably
Sabas and Nicetas. Sabas seems to have been asking for trouble.
Christians were ordered to eat sacrificial meat; a ruse was set up to
substitute "clean" meat in its place; Sabas refused to take part in
the deception and loudly spilled the beans about it in public. He
was exiled and refused to allow officials to swear that there were no
Christians in his village. In 372 he was arrested and finally
drowned, probably at Targoviste (NW of Bucharest)

Angelo of Chivasso (blessed) (d. 1495) Angelo Carletti was born in
Piedmont, educated at the U. of Bologna (at least early accounts say
so; his name isn't on the university's registers), became a senator
back home in Chivasso, and settled down to a normal pious secular
life. But when his mom died, A. gave away his wealth and became an
Observant Franciscan. He became a great preacher to the poor of the
mountain villages and his manual of moral theology (the *Summa
Angelica*) was so popular that it rated public burning by Luther in
1520. A's cult was approved in 1753.
