Plasma screens in libraries
might be useful Hugh - if you were clear about control issues.

One idea occurred to me, that libraries could host breakfast/lunchtime/evening events around the time of the Olympics, as an alternative to the alcohol-fuelled sessions down the pub. People like the communal aspect of watching together - but the pub precludes children, non-drinkers and others who aren't in to that sort of environment from taking part. Libraries could make a little income selling tea/coffee, cold drinks, possibly even bacon butties! This idea could be extended to other major sporting fixtures or even non-sports events of a national nature such as royal occasions. Of course you'd need the right library layout (meeting room, large space and/or do it during closed periods) and licences etc, but it could prove popular.

As a suggestion, could you take up the 'free' option on a trial basis for six months, test reaction and ensure you've got a break clause to allow you either to take control on a paid basis or withdraw entirely if it doesn't work.

Good luck & let us know how you get on!

Subject: [LIS-PUB-LIBS] Plasma screens in libraries

Dear List,

we have been approached by a company offering a plasma display screen for use in a library, which would carry advertising (of an approved range of advertisers) for 50 minutes per hour, with 10 minutes for any library material. It would be free for us, which is of course the attraction.

Another option is to pay for screens but have full control over content displayed.

We are unsure at present - is it really a solution in search of a problem?

I would be grateful to hear from anyone using plasma screens in libraries - cost, what they are used for, are they useful/economic, have they made a difference, etc etc.

Thanks

Hugh Paton
