Dear colleagues,

The Community Dimensions of Learning Object Repositories project (CD-LOR) is delighted to announce the release of CD-LOR Deliverable 1: Report on Learning Communities and Repositories: http://www.ic-learning.dundee.ac.uk/projects/CD-LOR/CDLORdeliverable1_learningcommunitiesreport.doc

This extensive and detailed report includes a 2-page Executive Summary.

CD-LOR was funded by the JISC from June 2005 until May 2007 to identify and analyse the factors that influence practical uptake and implementation of learning object repositories (LORs) within a range of different learning communities.
There has been much discussion about the barriers to implementation and use of LORs, but this has not been tailored to the needs of specific types of learning communities.  Moreover, pedagogical, social, and organisational factors have not been at the forefront in LOR development to date, and implementation is still relatively immature.  CD-LOR aims to investigate these issues in order to develop guidelines tailored for a range of different learning communities.

The first CD-LOR deliverable is a report detailing the findings of initial desk research (including a literature review) and stakeholder consultation carried out by the project up to the end of January 2006.  The report is the foundation upon which the remaining deliverables will be built, and was intended to give an initial mapping of types of learning communities to barriers and enablers to uptake and embedding of LORs.  However, the notion of “types of learning communities” changed somewhat in the early stages of the project, when it became clear that defining and mapping dimensions of learning communities may be more useful.  While the report will not be updated, we acknowledge that it is only the beginning of our understanding of this area.  We welcome feedback, comments and discussion from the wider educational community throughout the life of the project, in order to inform the remaining deliverables.

We also intend to put the questions based on our community dimensions onto the JISC DigiRep wiki for wider public discussion and development, so that we may begin sketching out the Structured Guidelines (CD-LOR Deliverable 9).  We'll let you know when that becomes available for input.

Regards,
Sarah
