RESEARCHER

Research using the General Practice Research Database (gprd)

POST REF: RE05/18

Grade:                        Researcher, full-time post

Responsible:             Dr Martin Frisher

Accountable to:         Professor Peter Croft, Professor Ilana Crome, Professor Stephen Chapman

Tenable:                     3 years

Salary:                        Research Grade RA1A (up to £22,289)

Location:                    Medicines Management – GPRD/Addiction Research Group

Introduction and rationale

Keele University has developed an active programme of research using the General Practice Research Database (GPRD).  The GPRD constitutes a unique resource for research on the epidemiology of GP consultations.  The Department of Medicines Management and the Addiction Research Group at Keele have developed a programme of work using the database.  The national database has approximately 400 practices in the UK with data from over 2 million patients from 1987 to the present, representing 3.9% of the population.  It is anticipated that we will take advantage of the recently announced  collaboration between the MRC and the GPRD, allowing UK academics free access to GPRD data (http://www.gprd.com/news/#MRC).  The licence funded by the MRC will cover free provision of GPRD data to academics for up to 50 projects each year, for five years.

We are looking for a graduate with demonstrable expertise and knowledge of research methods, statistical analysis and database handling, to work on a programme of defined projects involving analysis of the GPRD datasets in the field of addiction research. This work will be the basis of a collaboration between the GPRD group in Addiction Research, based in Medicines Management, and the GP Network Research Group within the Primary Care Sciences Research Centre.  The post is funded by the North Staffordshire Primary Care Research Consortium, on a fixed term basis, to strengthen collaborative working between these two groups.

The post-holder will be responsible for analysing and writing up this work in conjunction with other members of the Addiction and Primary Care Sciences Research Groups. In addition, the post-holder will actively seek funding to extend this work.

Support for this post

Academic leadership to the Addiction/GPRD Research group is provided by Professor Ilana Crome in Academic Psychiatry and Professor Stephen Chapman and Dr Martin Frisher in Medicines Management.  A second academic post within Medicines Management (Dr Heath Heatlie) provides key expertise and support, and has 80% time dedicated to GPRD-related research.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Main duties and responsibilities

The programme of work will be selected from the current set of proposals in preparation. These include:

Substance misuse and psychiatric illness

To instigate a new study of the longitudinal association between substance misuse and psychiatric illness, including their interrelationship across the life span.

Familial illness

To investigate the impact of parental substance misuse and psychiatric disorder on the health status of children, including their own levels of psychiatric problems and substance misuse.

Further projects relating to the collaboration between the Addiction and the Primary Care Research Groups will be added as the postholder becomes established in their new role, and the programme of work relating to GPRD is further developed.

Specific:

1.      Be responsible for the design and analysis of research projects undertaken within the plan agreed by the project leader and project management team.

2.      Contribute to the writing up of original papers and reports arising from these studies.

3.      Develop new project proposals related to the research questions outlined above, for external grant submission.

4.      Contribute to dissemination of the GPRD addiction group’s research studies.  This would be expected to include conference presentations/peer reviewed publications.

5.      Liaise and network with relevant individuals in clinical practice to ensure clinical insights underpin the interpretation of GPRD data and results

6.      Contribute to opportunities to increase the knowledge base of research staff in issues affecting design and analysis of studies based on the use of primary care consultation databases, and the GPRD in particular.

7.      Contribute to teaching and research training programmes relating to analysis of clinical data, particularly in the primary care setting.

8.      By negotiation with the Director of the Research Institute, complete a personal programme of research.

General:

9.      Keep abreast of current best practice and developments in this field, and contribute to the establishment of robust research management and governance procedures.

10.  Organise and support project collaboration meetings between the GPRD addiction research group and the GP Network Research group in Primary Care Sciences

11.  Undertake a programme of advanced training in research methodology relevant to this post.

12.  Participate fully in the intellectual life of the Department and Research Institute, including participation in the departmental research seminar and critical appraisal programme, workshops and team meetings.

13.  Ensure knowledge of and compliance with University policies and procedures.

This job description provides an overall indication of the scope of responsibility and the range of duties involved in this post.  It is neither exclusive nor exhaustive, and there will be a requirement that the postholder undertake other duties within reason as requested by the Project Lead. The research group is committed to supporting staff members to become independent researchers with particular expertise in primary care research.
