medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

From: Emmanuel PIERRE <[log in to unmask]>

> In Clermont Ferrand, Notre Dame du Port, there is the most funny
expression of Joseph I know, his beard being pulled by Archange
Gabriel because of his incredubility about Mary bearing God's child :

an extraordinary iconography (which i've not seen before), and one which,
surely, must be seen as expressing some sort of insult to or contempt for (?)
the Hapless Joe (his Haplessness being the Usual treatment of him in
romanesque Nativity scenes).

i mentioned previously, on the Beard Pullers' thread (what that here or on
Med-Art?), that pulling a gentilehomme's beard was regarded in _El Cid_ as a
great insult and that Superhero (who is styled "el de la barba florida") took
great care to bind up his beard with a ribbon to make it harder for his
enemies to jerk him around by it.

one wonders if we are not dealing with some sort of folk motief of Joseph as
Cuckhold?
