i'd forgotten that.

spent a hellishly hot summer in 1970 or so, excavating (or, breaking a
sympathetic sweat watching members of the Williams College football team
excavating) the remains of the Carolingian abbey of Psalmody, orginally a
Roman _villa_ on an island in the Commarge, now shown on detailed maps as "Mas
Psalmody".


i remember the farmer's wife brought us great terra cotta jugs of cool water
with fresh menthe in them --quite amazingly refreshing.

and, for dinner, once a whole bowlfull of snails which she'd just picked fresh
from the jardin.

but, i digress, more than somewhat....
