medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Tom is, of course, correct. I would point out, on the other hand, that the usage of scholarly bibliographies such as *Medioevo Latino* (grossly overlooked by too many anglophone scholars, to their detriment) and the *International Medieval Bibliography* indicates a clear trend to using contemporary vernacular spellings of place names. I suppose my years as a contributor to the IMB and to the edition/creation of its CD-ROM version have made their mark on how I view things! -- Best wishes, George -----Original Message----- From: medieval-religion - Scholarly discussions of medieval religious culture [mailto:[log in to unmask]]On Behalf Of Thomas Izbicki Sent: 02 March 2006 16:19 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [M-R] names I checked the catalog record for several English versions of the Legenda aurea. All use the Latin name. Pity: 'Jacopo da' sounds and reads so much more beautifully than 'James of', but that's just my taste in names! :-) What's really essential, in my opinion, is to use 'Varazze', not 'Voragine'. Fr'instance is Jacobus de Voragine James of Varrazze (and how many rs and zs does that have?!) I think I'm plumping for Lorens of Orleans for Friar Laurence/Lorens d'Orleans and so far I've used Raymond Pennaforte - but his name is also spelt Peņaforte and Penyaforte. If anybody has satisfactorily solved this problem, I'd be very grateful to hear from them Cate ********************************************************************** To join the list, send the message: join medieval-religion YOUR NAME to: [log in to unmask] To send a message to the list, address it to: [log in to unmask] To leave the list, send the message: leave medieval-religion to: [log in to unmask] In order to report problems or to contact the list's owners, write to: [log in to unmask] For further information, visit our web site: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html
