medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture The adjective 'goodly' derives from the Old English adjective 'godlic' (good), while 'bad' seems to have entered the English language as a Middle English word. The -ly of badly is therefore the typical adverbial extension while that of goodly can be either an adverbial suffix to the stem 'good' or a modern spelling for the Old English derived adjective.
