medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

The adjective 'goodly' derives from the Old English adjective 'godlic'
(good), while 'bad' seems to have entered the English language as a
Middle English word. The -ly of badly is therefore the typical adverbial
extension while that of goodly can be either an adverbial suffix to the
stem 'good' or a modern spelling for the Old English derived adjective.

Carolin

This really did irritate you! By not in my dictionary I meant [It was]
not in my
dictionary--or spell checker. I thought it was spelled malaprop, but
added the
"e" for parallelism with misanthrope. It's called poetic license.
While we
are at it can you explain why 'badly' is an adverb, and 'goodly' is an
adjective?
