medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (27. March) is the feast day of:

John of Lycopolis (d. 394) John was one of the great hermits of the
Egyptian desert. He started his adulthood as a carpenter, but at age
25 moved to a cave near Lycopolis. He spent forty years there,
winning fame as a prophet (he was consulted, among many others, by
Emperor Theodosius I).

Rupert (d. c. 718) Rupert is an interesting early missionary figure
of Germany. He was bishop of Worms, but expelled for an unknown
reason. Duke Theodo II of Bavaria then invited R. to come work in
his territory. He was given the ruins of Iuvavum to build a center,
which became the core of the city of Salzburg.

Gelasius of Armagh (d. 1174) Gelasius was the son of an Irish bard
who became abbot of Derry and then archbishop of Armagh in 1138. He
is said to have been the first Irish bishop to receive the pallium
from Rome.

Albert of Trent (d. 1181) Albert, bishop of Trent, was killed in the
wars between the Lombard League and Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. He
was venerated as a martyr.
