The Summer Course on Refugee Issues, Centre for Refugee Studies, York University, Toronto Dear Colleagues, The Centre for Refugee Studies at York University, Toronto is pleased to announce the 2006 Summer Course on Refugee Issues. The summer course is an internationally acclaimed 8-day training for academic and field-based practitioners working in the area of forced migration. The course involves a rigorous schedule of lectures, panels and discussions, and a simulation exercise. The course draws from academic and field-based experts for its faculty and, reflecting the Centre’s mission, serves as a hub for researchers, students, service providers and policy makers to share information and ideas. Course dates: June 10 – 18, 2006 Topics for the 2006 Summer Course* will include: - Root causes of forced migration - Ethics of forced migration - The convention refugee definition - Refugee law - The UNHCR - The UN human rights system - International human rights and national security - Trafficking and organized crime - Humanitarian emergencies and emergency assistance - Camp management - Psychological care and psychosocial interventions - Internally Displaced Persons - Transnationalism and identity - Resettlement in urban and rural areas - Sanctuary *Please refer to http://www.yorku.ca/crs/summer.htm for updates. As a part of the course, simulated refugee hearings will be held at the Immigration and Refugee Board Toronto. In this intensive exercise, course participants will be assigned roles to carry out mock refugee hearings. The goal of the exercise is to develop an understanding of the different duties and obstacles faced by each participant in the hearing. The simulation exercise is closely modeled on the framework of the Canadian refugee determination system. Course fees for the Summer Course on Refugee Issues. Early bird registration fee: $850. After March 31, 2006: $950 A limited number of partial tuition subsidies are available. Subsidy applications are due February 28, 2006. Sponsored applicants may be eligible for the $850 fee past March 31 if proof of sponsorship is provided before this date. Fee includes course and all course materials.
