For institutional representatives in HEFCE-funded HEIs, Universities in Northern Ireland, and HEFCE-funded FE colleges, with apologies for duplicate posting. ** Colleagues, Heads of HEFCE-funded HEIs, Universities in Northern Ireland, and HEFCE-funded FE colleges were recently sent details of the funding arrangements for the Teaching Quality Enhancement Fund 2006-07 to 2008-09. [The circular is on HEFCE's web site at http://www.hefce.ac.uk/pubs/hefce/2006/06_11/] The circular contains TQEF funding allocations for the next 3 years (the third year's being subject to the outcomes of the forthcoming comprehensive spending review). The total allocation for 2006-07 is nearly £50m, and the individual institutional allocations vary between about £4k and £100k (for FE colleges), to over £1m for a couple of universities. To release their funding allocation, institutions are asked to return their submissions, including an action plan, to HEFCE by Friday 16 June 2006. Paragraph 26 of the circular asks institutions to show, inter alia, "how they intend to use the funding to address needs, provision and take-up of professional development for new and experienced staff that takes account of the published national teaching standards". Colleagues will be aware that the national teaching standards (see http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/regandaccr/StandardsFramework.pdf [225 kB PDF]) includes "the use of appropriate learning technologies" as one of its 6 areas of core knowledge. . For this reason member institutions may wish to make explicit reference in their action plans to supporting some staff through ALT's Certified Membership scheme. There are further details about CMALT at http://www.alt.ac.uk/cmalt/, including the CMALT prospectus.
