Workplace Employment Relations Survey 2004

The Workplace Employment Relations Survey (WERS) is a nationally 
representative survey of workplaces that is widely recognised as the most 
comprehensive and reliable source of survey data on HR practices and 
employment relations in Britain. 

The data from WERS 2004 are now available to researchers through the UK 
Data Archive (Study Number: 5294). The Cross-Section Survey data comprise 
responses from approximately 2,300 managers, 1,000 employee 
representatives and 22,000 employees at the same workplaces. The data 
files for the Panel Survey comprise a follow-up interview with around 
1,000 of those establishments surveyed in the WERS 1998 Cross-Section. The 
deposit also includes the full suite of survey documentation, including 
questionnaires and a methodological report from the fieldwork contractor 
(National Centre for Social Research). Further details are available from

To coincide with the release of the data, the ESRC has funded the 
establishment of an Information and Advice Service for users of the data 
from WERS 2004. The service is led by John Forth and hosted at the 
National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR). Activities 
will include promoting use of the data, providing expert advice to 
analysts and organising user group meetings. Support will be available 
both to new users and to those already familiar with the WERS series. A 
web-site and mailing list have already been established 
(http://www.wers2004.info).
