medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (2. February) is the feast day of:

The Presentation in the Temple/Candlemas/Purification of the Virgin

Cornelius the Centurion (1st cent.) Cornelius appears in Acts 10 and
11. He was stationed in Caesarea, where he seems to have been a
classic "God-fearer." An angel told him to hunt out Peter; Peter at
the same time has a vision that suggests a bit more openness to
gentiles. So Peter is willing to accept C and converts him.

Lawrence of Canterbury (d. 619) Lawrence was one of the monks
shipped off to Kent with Augustine of Canterbury. L. was sent back
to Rome with news of the mission and to get further instructions; he
returned to succeed Gus as archbishop of Canterbury.

Burchard of Wurzburg (d. c. 764) Burchard was a West Saxon who
became a monk at Malmesbury. In c. 732 he went off to Germany to
join St. Boniface, who soon made B. bishop of Wurzburg. He founded a
school and a monastery.

Simon of Cascia (blessed) (d. 1348) Simon was an Umbrian who became
an Augustinian friar. He became a popular preacher and acquired a
large circle of penitent devotees.

Peter of Ruffia (blessed) (d. 1365) Peter was a Dominican from
Ruffia (Piedmont), a brilliant scholar who was put to work fighting
the Waldensians in his native region. He did so well that he was
made inquisitor general of the region in 1351. Two Waldensians
finally had enough and assassinated him. P's cult was approved in
1865.
