medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
saints of the day 20. February
Today (20. February) is the feast day of:
Eleutherius (d. 532) Eleutherius was first bishop of
Tournai. Unfortunately, a fire in 1092 destroyed early
information about him and his relics (I confess that I didn't
know that true relics can be destroyed). E. was a friend of St.
Medard; he became bishop in c. 486; he did a good job converting
Franks in his diocese. E. is supposed to have died of injuries
after a gang of Arians attacked him.
Eucherius (d. 743) Eucherius was a native of Orleans.
He became a monk at Jumieges in c. 714, but then succeeded his uncle
as bishop of Orleans. E. ran into trouble with Charles Martel by
protesting confiscations of Church property too vigorously; he was
banished to Cologne. E. became so popular in Cologne that
Charles moved him to Liege---where he also soon won popular acclaim.
He was eventually allowed to retire to the monastery of St.
Trond.
Wulfric (d. 1154) Wulfric has never been formally
canonized, but is interesting. He was a native of Somerset who
became a priest---a rather worldly priest who was especially fond of
hunting. But in time he converted to asceticism and eventually
became a recluse, practicing "heroic" mortifications that
included wearing chain mail next to his skin. W. was credited
with second sight and the power of healing. W's cult only
developed some decades after his death, when a large number of
miracles were reported at his tomb at Haselbury between 1185 and
1235.
