I'm currently reading _The Rise of Magic in Early Medieval Europe_, Valerie 
I J. Flint, Princeton UP. Your student may find both the book and its rich 
bibliography useful, although there is nary a word about midwives. There is 
plenty about the other two topics. There is also some discussion of carved 
effigies of parts of the body in need of a cure, a recent thread on this 
list...
