Media Awareness Seminar

Facilitated by a former BBC journalist and a PR professional, both of whom are media experts, the session will give participants a good overview of the workings of the media, including how to use the media proactively.

Included in the programme are sessions on the use of video clips to illustrate points and encourage audience participation. Participants will also have an opportunity to take part in a mock media interview, where specific key messages need to be communicated. This mock interview will then be played back for detailed analysis. The training session will prepare participants for handling media enquiries, show participants how to generate news interest in their activities as well as equip participants with crisis management techniques.

Objectives
By the end of the training day participants will:

• Understand the need for Media Awareness.
• Understand the need for good Media Relations.
• Know how to handle a media enquiry.
• Know what to say and what not to say when a journalist calls.
• Know whom to contact once the media call.
• Understand the role of the Press Office.
• Know how to Write a successful Press Release.
• Develop their news awareness - what make a news story.
• Know whether they have a good story, but hadn't realised it?
• Know how to generate news interest in their activities.
• Develop Media Strategy and Media Skills.
• Know how to manage a media interview (in theory).
• Learn about Crisis Management and Success Messages.
• Identify what further media training they might need

This is for you if you are an archive, library or museum practitioner who has little or no experience of handling the media
