How good is your library? Evaluating the Impact of libraries and information
services
Over the past few years Sharon Markless and David Streatfield have run various
workshops and research projects with librarians in different work settings. In parallel,
they have been designing tools to enable library staff to see what kinds of contribution
they make to their users' learning. All of this work was aimed at moving beyond
performance indicators (or 'efficiency indicators') to see the effectiveness of libraries
and information services. This experience has now been consolidated into a new
workshop for library service managers, designed to help people get to grips with
evaluating service impact, incorporate this effort into the overall service monitoring
and evaluation process, and put the evidence of success across in convincing ways.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL:
· considered the main differences between monitoring efficiency and evaluating impact and their consequences for evidence gathering
· explored the main stages in evaluating service impact
· examined how to incorporate impact evaluation into their ways of working
· focused on issues in presenting impact evidence effectively for different purposes.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Library and information service managers in any work environment who are
responsible for evaluating services or considering how to do so.
WORKSHOP LEADER
Sharon Markless and David Streatfield are both experienced LIS trainers who
specialize in service impact evaluation. Their book Evaluating the Impact of Your
Library Service; the Quest for Evidence will soon be published by Facet.
