I don't have a copy here, but I believe Esgairhir mine in Central Wales tried convict labour in the early 1700s sometime, and that I read it in Marilyn Palmer's NMRS monograph on the site. I also recall reading that they found the site so desolate that they were often heard to complain they would rather have been hung! I was up there for a walk today, and in the cold force 9 wind, intermittent rain, and thick fog, I could well sympathise! Cheers - John
