When I was researching my article on bowsenning wells, I came across a Dutch research paper which contrasted the Ethiopian spiritual use of water with that of the Celts and showed how the two cultures drew from each other in the very early days of Christianity. It was fascinating to think how cultures so distant could have exchanged ideas and practices. There are huge pilgrimages to important church sites such as Lalibela (not sure of the spelling without looking it up), bathing in wells or tanks, aspersing with buckets of holy water and so on - so not so different from the Church in Russia (though the Ethiopian Copts have always been a bit odd in their observances).
