Hi Adele,

As a (recent) former student I would recommend that resources are
available before hand. As a student it was nice to know what the lecture
would be about by reading the notes before a lecture and basically being
prepared more. It can make a big difference with or without lecture
notes before class.

With lecture notes the student feels they are concentrating on listening
to the lecturer rather than trying to jot things down in a hurry, and
drawing diagrams, which are already on handouts. Also it can prevent to
some degree students referring to their friends are asking 'What did he
just say?'. But with notes already prepared with diagrams and good
explanations, students find that they can particpate and engage more in
the lecture.

Having notes before is beneficial for the student, as it enables them to
keep up to speed while the lecturer is discussing a particular topic and
to listen, concentrate and write things down which are meaningful when
they refer back to their notes.

By not having material before hand can often disturb classes and
students can become frustrated, escpecially if students become used to
other lecturers distributing materials online and then turn up to
another class and find that another lecturer has not posted any
material. Students like routine, i certainly did anyway.

On the other hand it would sometimes mean that we wouldn't turn up to
lecture but this was mainly due to the fact that it was just one of
those days! not because class notes were not available. Hope this helps.

Subject: [VLES] VLEs and Student Attendance

Hi everyone

We are beginning to rollout our portal with staff and there is some
reticence from them regarding making resources available to students
after lectures in case students don't turn up for lessons, which will
affect our attendance records and funding.

Has anyone any preventative measures of such a thing or could point me
in the direction of evidence of this not being the case - I need to be
able to defend the cause!!

Thanks a lot

Adele
