medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Assuming Kanutus = Canutus, is this Knud any relation to the Canutus
commemorated in the Roman Calendar (prior to the 1969 revisions) on 19
January?

January 7 is also the principal feast day (passio) of Knud Lavard (Kanutus,
dux et martyr) of Denmark. St. Knud Lavard was the son of King Erik Ejegod.
As Duke of Sønderjylland (Slesvig) and King of the Obodrites, he gained a
reputation as a great and noble leader. In 1131 he was murdered by his
cousin, Prince Magnus, who feared him because of his popularity. The
canonization of Duke Knud was obtained by his posthumous son, King Valdemar
the Great, from Pope Alexander III in 1169.

Knud Lavard's passio was celebrated in the Danish Church Province during
the Middle Ages. He also had a status as patron saint of Danish guilds and
chapels in cities and trading posts in the Baltic Sea Region, as well as
for Danish crusades in that region.
