Jeremy,

many thanks for clarifying this and what was a long and arduous process for
us all!

MOD received the notification of listing last December and we are
disseminating the information to the relevant sites. It should be noted that
during the long wait between proposal and listing we undertook to treat
these buildings as if they were listed.

If any HERS have concerns over any of the identified buildings still in MOD
ownership please feel free to get in touch.

We are also sympathetic to the wider management of the 20 key airfield sites
identified in the report, and as one of the HPR pilot sites RAF Scampton now
has an excellent set of management guidelines, not only for the listed
hangers but the whole of the historic airfield. Once these are finalised
then I'd be happy to release copies to those interested to see if they are
of any use on airfields no longer in MOD ownership.

Regards to all

Niall

As I was responsible for the survey when I was in Listing Team, and
endured the frustration of waiting 3 years after submission for the
recommendations to see the light of day, I have attached a short summary
of the project.

As airfields are still a very hotly contested space in planning terms, I
am considering - and will follow this up with Robin - a national
gazetteer of sites cross-referenced to their date, function,
completeness etc.

These recommendations now comprise the most comprehensive protection to
aviation heritage in the world. WWII sites are a challenge that we could
not grapple with successfully at the time, however. The inclusion of
Scampton as a pilot in the Heritage Protection Review will open the door
to how extensive landscapes of this type (other than conservation areas)
be afforded a degree of protection.

Good afternoon,

Following on from Julia Wise's comments my colleague Robin Page has
asked me to forward a response.

"Dear List members

Further to Julia Wise's posting regarding the recent results of the
English Heritage Thematic Listing Survey of WWI and WWII airfield
buildings, list members may be interested to learn that the National
Monuments Record at Swindon does hold a large body of data on military
aviation, particularly WWII but also including some WWI sites. This
includes digital data in the Archives and Monuments Information England
(AMIE) Database and related spatial data held in our corporate GIS
systems. The WWII dataset of airfields and related buildings or
structures was enhanced between 2003 and 2005. There are some 1,575
records in this dataset including 550 military airfields: the
overwhelming majority of the actual airfields have been polygonized as
GIS data. These records will be concorded with the new listings in due
course, but in any case where appropriate the proposed grades suggested
in the 2003 Thematic Survey were generally noted in the full AMIE
record. Please note that this AMIE dataset includes many monuments that
do not enjoy statutory protection or indeed are no longer extant and it
is not the dedicated Listed Buildings database. Part of the textual
information can also be viewed by searching on English Heritage's
PastScape web site at
http://pastscape.english-heritage.org.uk

We are currently exploring the feasibility of extending the enhancement
of the AMIE military aviation records to the WWI dataset. The NMR also
holds data on over 19,700 military aircraft crash sites. Many of these
are in the in the maritime environment but also in terrestrial upland
areas, for example Cumbria, the Peak District, the Pennines and the
moors of the south-west of England. We also hold over 19,000 records
derived from the Defence of Britain database: these are in a raw
migrated form at present and will be the subject of a data concordance
enhancement project in the near future to iron out duplications with
existing NMR records.

Kind Regards
Robin Page

Hi folks,
Following up a reference in the 9th December edition of Planning
magazine,
I've found the following press release on the DCMS website (nothing on
the EH
website!) about new listings of airfield buildings following on from
EH's
thematic survey:
