On 1/10/2005 the Times (p.19) carried a story 'Biggest cuts since Beeching
signalled by rail minister', with a map showing rail services to be reduced in
frequency, stations closed on retained lines, or even lines closed altogether.
Since then I've seen nothing on this. One of the biggest cuts appeared to be the
closure to passengers altogether of the 40 mile line between Doncaster and
Barnetby Junction (North Lincolnshire) via Scunthorpe - presumably the actual
line would be retained to serve the (albeit slowly dying) steelworks at
Scunthorpe. The map was not very well drawn and this could be a mistake.
Do any crit geoggers, esp those in the Lincolnshire / S Yorks area, know
anything of this. I know that the above mentioned passenger service has been in
the beady eyes of the Beeching Brigade for quite a few years, especially since
the infamous Serpell Report of the mid 80s - thankfully, for UK road transport
congestion and pollution, never implemented.....or am I just being
prematurely optimistic here?
