30TH UK TRANSPORT CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION at the UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM 6 and 7 April 2006 Wasted Miles, Wasted Money A less congested, more energy efficient future How can we manage growing demand for transport whilst reducing its adverse impacts? No one solution exists to our transport problems - rather, the solution requires small but important gains across a whole range of transport activities. This conference brings together leading practitioners from a variety of disciplines all working towards modifying the demand for travel. The focus is on the huge wastage that we currently accept as part of every day travel - 900 million empty vehicle seat kilometres driven every year, large numbers of failed first-time home deliveries, under-utilised public transport and inefficient vehicle fleets. The solutions discussed are all within the powers of local authorities and others to influence and should make a substantial contribution to the achievement of targets for congestion, pollution and accessibility. The benefits will be felt by users and providers of all modes. The Conference promises to be both stimulating and invaluable to those engaged in developing solutions to deliver the Local Transport Plan 2 and beyond.
