The department of Social Geography and Planning invites applications for a
3.5-year PhD-position for the project ‘The effect of ICT on activity
patterns and accessibility’. The project is part of the research
programme “System innovation in Land use and Area oriented development in
Town and Country”.

The aim of the project is to investigate the various impacts of ICT on
individuals’ activity and travel patterns and on the quality of the range
of feasible activity patterns. New Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT) have impact on the way in which individuals schedule
activities and trips, through substitution, modification or changes in
constraints. Likewise, their range of optional activity patterns
(accessibility) may be impacted by ICT. Since ICT impacts individuals' use
of space and accessibility, it is also relevant for spatial policies. ICT
may change the demand for dwellings, facilities, stores and work places
with respect to their location, design and functional specifications, and
may lead to innovative forms of spatial organisation, such as new
combinations of functions or new types of facilities. However, a
comprehensive insight of the impacts of ICT on the total activity pattern
and individuals’ options is still lacking. Such insight is necessary to
support spatial policies aimed at the development of new land use concepts
based on the integration of ICT in daily activity patterns. To investigate
the various impacts of ICT on individuals’ activity and travel patterns, an
accessibility measure will be developed that accounts for the presence of
ICT. The accessibility measure will be used to evaluate alternative spatial
configurations with respect to their attractiveness to individuals under
the availability of ICT.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with an interest in the
interaction between ICT and activity/travel patterns. He/she should have a
relevant degree in geography, civil engineering, econom(etr)ics or social
sciences. Prior experience with statistical analysis is preferred. In the
appointment period you will write a PhD thesis and a number of papers in
internationally renowned peer-reviewed journals. You will present your
research during national and international conferences. You have the
opportunity to follow courses relevant to your research. In addition you
will assist in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Social
Geography and Planning.

We offer a full-time 3.5-year PhD position with gross monthly salary
starting at € 1933,- in the first year to € 2472,- in the last year of
appointment. We also offer a pension scheme, a collective health insurance
and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective
Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities and are supplemented with a
holiday allowance of 8% per year and an end-of-year bonus of 3%.
