Desktop Search
Tools – Managing the Flight Deck
The information profession struggles on a day-to-day
basis to keep up to date with innovations and shifts in new technologies for smarter
searching. The focus, often, is on the need to retrieve and assimilate external
information and data. In the mean time, our personal digital files and internal
local resource base tends to fall into neglect. The focus on efficient
information management is now moving to the desktop, where different types of
information stored or accessed locally needs to be organised and searched just
as effectively. The desktop has developed into a flight deck where
everything the pilot needs to know is displayed: be it routine flight
information, autopilot routines, the tricky landing and take-off or the
all-important emergency procedures.
The key for both the pilot and the desktop user is to
be able to access the right information at the right time, and to distinguish
the vital from the nice-to-know. Desktop access to vast amounts of in-house
data, as well as access to the intranet and external resources means that
effective searching, as well as good design of the desktop screens, is
essential.
Numerous desktop search solutions tease us with the
promise that they can help to organise and find information on the desktop PC
as well as across the corporate network. This meeting will look at some
developments in desktop searching and some of the tools that are available and
will give you the opportunity to share your experience of such tools. It will
be a practical and informative day that will help improve your personal
information management skills and enable you to lay your hands, quickly and
efficiently, on that long lost file that you ferreted away for digital
posterity way back in…
